Functional feeds

Functional feeds

Functional feeds have specialised formulations and/or components which give feed a desirable effect over and above their nutritional value.

A feed with positive health benefits can be achieved by using specialised formulations of individual feed ingredients - for example in transfer diets, or through the addition of supplementary natural components, or though a combination of both.

At various stages in a fish's lifecycle, requirements for vitamins such as C and E increase in relation to certain physiological demands. In the same way, the correct composition or levels of trace elements and minerals such as calcium and phosphorous is important.

Fish performance against disease challenges can be aided by using EWOS functional feeds.

EWOS have devoted extensive research capacity in the area of producing feeds which prepare fish for and improve their resilience to farm handling and disease challenges.

We have benchmarked and selected the best functional components to add to our feeds including natural yeast extracts in the form of nucleotides, glucans and prebiotics, i.e. components positively influencing the intestinal bacterial microbiota.

Our three leading functional feeds are EWOS boosterfeed, EWOS prebiosal and EWOS opal PD; a proven successful formulation in the mitigation of mortalities cause by pancreas disease.

EWOS boosterfeed

EWOS boosterfeed is a natural dietary supplement that provides fish with additional building blocks for energy and cell production in the form of nucleotides.  This concept has proved extremely successful in improving fish health and performance by enhancing immune responses, disease resistance, and improving several other cell-dependant biological processes.

Some of the benefits of EWOS boosterfeed are:

  • Increased resistance against bacterial, viral and fungal infection
  • Reduced infestations with ecto-parasites such as sealice
  • Reduced effects of stress
  • Increased specific antibody response post-vaccination
  • Increased capacity for osmoregulation
  • Beneficial effects on intestinal development and morphology

EWOS boosterfeed is approved for use in organic farming systems

EWOS prebiosal

Promoting good gut health ensures your fish will have number of positive advantages both to their health and nutrient absorption from feed.

EWOS prebiosal is a unique blend of prebiotics and synergistic ingredients that can be included in any EWOS diets.

Prebiotics are naturally occurring carbohydrates which encourage the growth or activity of beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract. They are non-digestible, ensuring a positive, functional effect through-out the gastrointestinal tract. They are also widely recognised in human nutrition and have been used in animal production as a sustainable alternative to antibiotics.

EWOS’ prebiosal blend of prebiotics acts beneficially in a host’s gut in several ways including binding to disease causing bacteria, reducing their opportunities for settlement in the intestinal tract. EWOS prebiosal creates an environment in the gut which provides a suitable substrate for the host’s normal ‘commensal’ bacteria.

EWOS prebiosal has many positive benefits:

  • Enhances growth through increasing gut surface area and improving lipid metabolism
  • Lowers FCR
  • Improve intestinal physiology
  • Improve resistance to disease in salmon by controlling pathogenic bacteria and promoting healthy bacterial communities in the gut.

EWOS opal PD

The PD virus causes severe pancreatic cell loss and heart and skeletal muscle inflammation. This can lead to significant mortalities. The EWOS PD diet has been carefully formulated to address these symptoms and improves the percentage of fish which recover from a PD outbreak.

EWOS PD diet:

  • Reduces pancreatic digestive stress
  • Uses a low fat and highly digestible formulation

  • Reduces inflammation of muscle and heart tissue

  • Includes a special blend of long chain sugar molecules to reduce tissue damage, aiding preservation of fillet quality
  • Mitigates growth losses
  • Increases availability of nucleotides for cell division and tissue repair.

EWOS boosterfeed is added as standard (nucleotides also act as feed attractants, encouraging feed intake in recovering fish)

Salmon Feed Sustainability : Marine ingredients

This edition of EWOS Spotlight looks at the varied issues surrounding the environmental sustainability of marine ingredients used to make salmon feed and illustrates how EWOS is working through an active research and management agenda to further secure the sustainability of its products at all levels. EWOS Spotlight is an occasional, international publication from EWOS that discusses topical issues relating to fish feed.

Feed as a Tool in the Management of Sea Lice

EWOS Spotlight is an occasional, international publication from EWOS that discusses topical issues relating to fish feed in some depth. In this edition, the SpotLight is put on feed as a tool in the management of sea lice. Good control of sea lice is critical to the future sustainability of the salmon farming industry and EWOS has an active programme to secure access to in-feed anti-sea lice treatments and supportive compounds (such as EWOS boost) for the salmon farming industry.

EWOS sponsor Unst charity fly fishing event

Over 25 anglers took part in a charity fly fishing event on the Shetland island of Unst recently. The event successfully raised £1586 for the Teenage Cancer Appeal. The competition started at 8pm with the weigh in at 8am the following morning hence taking advantage of “Simmer Dim” on June 20th/21st where between about midnight and 2am the light is more than adequate for fishing.
