EWOS Facts and Achievements
Key Facts:
• EWOS is a business division of Cermaq AS, a Norwegian company quoted on the Oslo stock exchange (CEQ);
• We hold a 1/3 share of the world market for salmon and trout feed;
• EWOS group sold a total of 876,000 tonnes of fish feed in 2010 and had operating revenues of NOK 7,388 million;
• At the end of 2010 there were 685 people employed in EWOS group;
• EWOS operates with seven feed factories: three are located in Norway, whilst Chile, Canada, Scotland and Vietnam each have one factory;
• In 2011, we invested in a feed operation in Vietnam that produces feed mainly for pangasius catfish.
• Substantial research and development is carried out in the areas of fish nutrition and feed technology through EWOS Innovation at purpose built facilities in Norway and in Chile.
Recent Achievements:
• Fishmeal inclusion in feeds has been reduced significantly from typical levels of 75% or more in the early 1980’s. Today, we can produce commercial salmon feeds with only 10% fishmeal;
• We estimate that EWOS group used only 1.25 times more marine protein than was produced using its feed in 2010 (1.56 in 2009) and 1.32 times more marine oil (1.63 in 2009). This reflects very efficient use of valuable marine nutrients in the feed.
• In 2010, 21 % of marine ingredients used in the production of EWOS feeds came from fish trimmings (18% in 2009 and 8% in 2008).
• The EWOS growth index (EGI) model leads the market in helping salmon farmers to accurately model growth of their fish stocks;
• A range of sophisticated functional feeds have been introduced to the market over the past decade, like EWOS boost and EWOS prebiosal for example. These products have grown to become an important part of our product portfolio and help fish farmers around the world to manage the health status and welfare of their fish stocks;
• EWOS introduced the first 0.6mm extruded micro pellet for juvenile salmon, helping to improve tank hygiene and therefore fish health and welfare;
• Research into nutrient optimisation enabled EWOS to significantly reduce the dietary pigment level in salmon feeds without impairment of the fillet appearance;
• All EWOS salmon feed plants are independently certified to four international management standards for quality (ISO9001); food safety (ISO22000); environment (ISO14001); and health & safety (OHSAS18001) management. We call this EWOS integrated management system.
• EWOS was the first salmon feed supplier to develop a supply chain ecological footprint model for salmon feed.
