EWOS first to bring Panaferd Ax to Scottish Fish Farmers

EWOS are pleased to bring our customers the option to utilise Panaferd, the latest offering in natural pigmentation of salmon. Panaferd is a naturally derived alternative to synthetic astaxanthin and producing naturally pigmented fish at a competitive cost.

Panaferd contains the dried cells of Paracoccus carotinifaciens, a soil-dwelling bacterium which naturally contains carotenoids. The bacteria are grown by fermentation and have been selected to yield high carotenoid concentrations but have not been genetically modified. Although astaxanthin is the principal pigment within Panaferd, it also yields significant amounts of natural adonarubin and canthaxanthin, both of which provide additional contributions to pigmentation.

Initial results in commercial use in Scotland are encouraging, with flesh pigment deposition and stability comparable to that of synthetic pigmentation regimes. Feedback we’ve received on a fish generation pigmented with Panaferd has also been very positive from the retailers.

We believe that Panaferd gives salmon producers a further opportunity for differentiation in the marketplace. The product has full FDA and EU approval for use and is available from EWOS now.
