His Excellency Knut Storeløkken, the Ambassador of Norway to Viet Nam, opened the representative offices of three aquaculture related companies in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam September 12th 2008, with the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Cao Duc Phat. The three Norwegian companies have received partial funding from both Innovation Norway and NORAD, the Norwegian Agency for Development Co-operation, to carry out research into the local aquaculture industries in Viet Nam. With the rapid development of aquaculture in Viet Nam supported by the government, this funding will help to identify opportunities for these companies to set up business in the country.
The three companies operate in different fields of interest within aquaculture – each with strong possibilities to contribute to sustainable aquaculture development in Viet Nam. PHARMAQ is a global veterinary pharmaceutical company with its primary focus on aquaculture and is the number one supplier of pharmaceuticals to the aquaculture industry world wide. EWOS is a leading and trusted salmon feed manufacturer owned by Cermaq ASA, with a strong tradition of research development and close relations with its fish farming customers, ensuring high quality products and services. AKVA group is the world’s most recognised aquaculture technology supplier, with four main brands covering equipment and systems for both cage and land based farming systems.
Attending the opening ceremony were representatives from the Viet Nam Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the three government Research Institutes for Aquaculture, the main seafood trade organisation VASEP and members of the aquaculture industry in Viet Nam. A brief seminar introduced the audience to the prospects of the Vietnamese aquaculture industry in the next 10 years and how the three companies propose they could be part of the developments.
