EWOS Takes its Message to the Seafood Summit
Experts agree that as wild fish stocks decline and the world's population grows we will increasingly rely on aquaculture to feed the hungry planet. But many conservationists are concerned about the sustainability of an aquaculture industry that uses 58% of the world's fishmeal supply for feed.
In his presentation at the 2009 Seafood Summit, Einar Wathne (Deputy Managing Director), highlighted how EWOS has reduced the proportion of marine ingredients in salmon feed from typical levels of more than 75% in the early 1980's to less than 25% today. He also drew attention to the changing regulatory framework for aquafeed and how, through our investment in R&D, EWOS is actively developing alternatives to fishmeal and fish oil.
Einar also launched the principle of the essential role salmon has as a vector, transferring valuable omega three fatty acids from fish oil to delicious, healthy human food. 25 years ago almost all of this oil was used for industrial purposes. This work will enable us to further reduce our dependency on marine ingredients in future, whilst we still retain the human health benefits that farmed salmon enjoys.
