Salmon feed innovation can be characterised by three distinct trends over the past three decades: a huge reduction in FCR; a reducing trend in dependence on marine ingredients; and more recently, the development of functional feeds to support fish health and productivity.

Strong growth in demand for seafood from aquaculture is driving farmed fish production and therefore demand for feed. The consequences of this were the subject of much discussion at the recent North Atlantic Seafood Forum in Oslo, Norway. Kjell Bjordal (COO EWOS) was there to offer reassurance, "We have the resources to cover expected growth in a sustainable manner."

EWOS has for the first time passed the milestone of a combined production of 1 million tonnes from our operations in Norway, Scotland, Chile, Canada and Vietnam in one financial year. (Oslo 2010.12.17) Cermaq has today signed a joint venture agreement with the local partner, Anova Corporation, in Vietnam. Through its feed operations, EWOS, Cermaq is entering operations in the Vietnamese feed market.

EWOS issues a new edition of Spotlight dedicated to the challenges meeting customers’ demand for cost efficient fish feeds, with a lower proportion of the marine raw ingredients that have traditionally been used to ensure high performance. Intensive fish farming relies upon fishmeal and fish oil, but the supply of these ingredients is static or declining. This means that our reliance on marine resources in fish feed must be reduced, and that future increases in salmon and trout production must be matched by a decrease in the use of fishmeal and oil.

Kjell Bjordal , COO of EWOS, has the pleasure of informing that Mr.Andrés Tagle has been appointed Managing Director of EWOS Chile and will assume his position from September 1, 2010. As Managing director for EWOS Norway Geir Molvik has agreed to take on the position as COO Farming in Cermaq ASA, the board of EWOS AS has today appointed Atle Kvist (46) as the new Managing Director for EWOS Norway

EWOS Innovation has developed a new method for measuring the dependency of fish farming on marine nutrients like protein and oil. Fish Farming International picked up the story with an article in their January edition. The article raised interest amongst the Aquaculture Common Issues Group of Seafish, the UK’s cross-industry seafood body, who asked EWOS to make a presentation at their March meeting.

Current information provides no reports on physical casualties on our employees and limited damages on the properties and constructions.

Dr. Adel El-Mowafi has recently been appointed as the new Managing Director for EWOS Innovation, taking over from Dr Per Olav Skjervold who has moved on to a new role with the Norwegian Research Council.

In response to the erroneous Intrafish article (05 August 09) on EWOS and Icelandic mackerel, we would like to clarify our position on this matter. “When it comes to the sustainability issue its right we don’t buy fish from what are judged as unsustainable fisheries. But, the position on mackerel from Iceland is, in our opinion, a politically unresolved quota discussion rather than an unresolved sustainability issue”, says Einar Wathne (Deputy Managing Director for EWOS Group).

The new fish feed factory in the Western part of Norway, has a production capacity of 250,000 tonnes per year and is the most modern fish feed factory in the world.

Einar Wathne (Deputy Managing Director, EWOS Group) travelled to San Diego recently to make a presentation at the Seafood Summit. His presentation highlighted how EWOS has reduced the proportion of marine ingredients in salmon feed from typical levels of more than 75% in the early 1980's to less than 25% today.

Sir – Your article on aquaculture (“Come, friends, and plough the sea”, January 3rd) was spoiled by surprisingly many misunderstandings and errors.

EWOS came out best in a recent report comparing feed performance between the three feed producers: Skretting, EWOS and Biomar.

EWOS is the first international group within fisheries and aquaculture to achieve ISO 22000 certification, the international standard for food safety, for all of their commercial fish feed companies. “This certification is an important part of our ambitions to be a leader in all parts of the world we operate in”, says Kjell Bjordal, COO in EWOS group.
