EWOS is a leading and trusted supplier of aquafeed for the international aquaculture industry. We operate fish feed manufacturing plants in all four of the world’s major salmon farming regions: Norway; Chile; Canada; and Scotland.

 

Key Facts:

  • EWOS is a division of the Norwegian company Cermaq ASA. Cermaq is a company quoted on the Oslo stock exchange (CEQ);
  • EWOS holds a 1/3 share of the world market for salmon and trout feed;
  • The EWOS group sold a total of 902,000 tonnes of fish feed in 2008 and had operating revenues of NOK 6,859 million;
  • At the end of 2008 there were 774 people employed in the EWOS group;
  • EWOS operates with six modern feed factories: three are located in Norway, whilst Chile, Canada and Scotland each have one factory;
  • Substantial research and development is carried out in the areas of fish nutrition and feed technology through EWOS Innovation at purpose built facilities in Norway and in Chile.

 

Recent Achievements:

  • Fishmeal inclusion in feeds has been reduced significantly from typical levels of 75% or more in the early 1980’s to less than 25% today in certain feeds;
  • The EWOS growth index (EGI) model leads the market in helping salmon farmers to accurately model growth of their fish stocks;
  • Six targeted functional feeds have been introduced to the market within the last decade, helping salmon farmers to manage the health status and welfare of their fish stocks;
  • EWOS introduced the first 0.6mm extruded micro pellet for juvenile salmon, helping to improve tank hygiene and therefore fish health and welfare;
  • Research into nutrient optimisation enabled EWOS to significantly reduce the dietary pigment level in salmon feeds without impairment of the fillet appearance;
  • All EWOS feed plants are certified to ISO 9001:2000 quality management system;
  • In 2008, all EWOS feed plants were certified to ISO 22000:2005 food safety management system;
  • A new ‘E-trace’ system enables electronic traceability from raw materials right through to finished feed products;
  • EWOS was the first salmon feed supplier to develop a supply chain carbon footprint model for salmon feed.

As Managing director for EWOS Norway Geir Molvik has agreed to take on the position as COO Farming in Cermaq ASA, the board of EWOS AS has today appointed Atle Kvist (46) as the new Managing Director for EWOS Norway

Nutrient Ratios Presented to Aquaculture Common Issues Group in London

EWOS Innovation has developed a new method for measuring the dependency of fish farming on marine nutrients like protein and oil. Fish Farming International picked up the story with an article in their January edition. The article raised interest amongst the Aquaculture Common Issues Group of Seafish, the UK’s cross-industry seafood body, who asked EWOS to make a presentation at their March meeting.
