Trial Facilities

The headquarters of EWOS Innovation is situated in Dirdal, east of Stavanger in Norway.  Lønningdal is another site also located in Norway, south of Bergen. The third site is located in Colaco, Chile.

The wide range of facilities allows us to develop new diets to support the demands of EWOS customers. We are also able to test potential new raw materials in the diets of fish at all stages of the life cycle, allowing greater flexibility in diet formulation and hence greater sustainability.

The site in Lønningdal has similar facilities to Dirdal for carrying out fish growth studies, allowing us to carry full scale documentation of new diets.

Dirdal

This is where most of the scientists are located. Here we have tank and sea cage trials facilities and a technology centre, allowing us to make and test new raw materials and diets.

The site was opened in 1986 and the Feed Technology Centre was commissioned in 1996.

In Dirdal we are able to run feed trials on fish from first feeding right up to market size (about 5 kg) in controlled conditions in tanks. Two sea sites, Oltesvik and Gråttnes, are located in Høgsfjorden, just a few kilometre from the head quarter. These sites are uses for to run full scale documentation trials under semi-commercial or commercial conditions.

The wide range of facilities in Dirdal allows us to develop new diets to support the demands of EWOS customers. We are also able to test potential new raw materials in the diets of fish at all stages of the life cycle, allowing greater flexibility in diet formulation and hence greater sustainability.
With more than 20 years of trials run here, we know how the systems work, enabling us to design trials optimally. This means that the results can be applied directly to industry.

Lønningdal

Like Dirdal, we have the ability to take fish from egg right through to harvest size in tanks, or move them to commercial scale on-growing facilities.  In the sea, we now have 3 sites operational close to Lønningdal, consisting of 90m circular cages or 24m x 24m steel cages.  This gives us the important ability to test new diets at commercial scale, before launching them on the market.  The facilities here complement those at Dirdal, allowing us a greater scope for trials and also a complete backup.

The site started in 1986, coming to full operation by 1988.  Lønningdal also has a fish health facility, where trials have been run to test functional feeds in pilot scale.

With more than 20 years experience of running trials here, the systems run smoothly, giving results which have been shown to be highly relevant to applications in industry.

Colaco Chile

The Calaco site is an excellent facility to test diets designed to meet the specific needs for a different market. Sometimes a market has unique requirements for R&D, where the trial fish should be exposed in the environment in where the fish are grown. To meet these, EWOS Innovation has established its own research farm at Colaco in the heart of the salmon farming area of Region X.

In June 2008, EWOS Innovation opened their new research facilities including the rebuilt of the experimental sea site, a new feed barge and automatic feeding system coupled with a new building with offices and full equipped laboratories.

EWOS Innovation Chile work in different research  projects including the development of new functional feeds for the control and prevention of fish diseases and in our efforts to improve the sustainability of fish feeds by reducing the levels of marine protein and oil in EWOS diets.

EWOS Innovation Chile has created a strong collaboration with local Universities and private research companies and has built an important network for scientific research. Our facilities are regularly visited by EWOS customers for technical meetings and to be informed at first hand on how our research projects are progressing.

The seawater facility allows us to test diets for Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout and coho salmon under semi-commercial conditions, allowing well conducted scientific trials to be run here.
